Lead Teaching Artist Position
El Sistema Colordo has an amazing opportunity for a teaching artist to lead our Garden Place Elementary site.
Garden Place is our first and largest program, serving 200 students from early childhood to 5th grade through in-school, after-school and summer music and youth orchestra programs. This full time position with benefits will be responsible for program management and leadership of the Garden Place teaching team.

Title: Lead Teaching Artist – Garden Place Academy, Denver
Full-time Salaried Position + Benefits
Position to being in early June (if available to lead summer programming) or no later than August 15, 2014.
The Lead Teaching Artist is responsible for in-school, after-school and summer teaching and program management at Garden Place Academy (GPA). Areas of responsibility include program oversight, management of all El Sistema Colorado teaching and site staff, pedagogical and program planning and evaluation, daily collaboration with school principal and staff, family and community engagement, and relationship with national El Sistema-inspired program managers. This is a full-time position, hired by and directly accountable to the Executive Director of El Sistema Colorado.
Teaching and Program Oversight Functions
o Ensure that El Sistema Colorado’s philosophy and mission are practiced consistently throughout the
o Serve as a Teaching Artist daily within the GPA in-school and after-school program.
o Develop and employ excellent, age-appropriate pedagogical teaching methods and repertoire
consistent with El Sistema core principles, incorporating best practices found in national and
international El Sistema programs which demonstrate superior outcomes.
o Establish expectations for student musical, behavioral and academic progress.
o Create and implement custom teaching plans and methods for individual students with special needs,
in collaboration with school principal, teachers, social worker and staff as needed.
o Plan and supervise implementation of evening and Saturday program days and special
events/performances by El Sistema Colorado students in collaboration with staff and volunteers.
o Coordinate the procurement and repair of all needed instruments and equipment for successful daily program implementation and performances.
o Recruit and select the highest quality individuals to serve as Teaching Artists, Teaching Assistants and Interns.
o Implement professional development for teaching artists and site staff to maintain excellent standards in the El Sistema Colorado classroom.
o Supervise El Sistema Colorado Teaching Artists, Site staff and volunteers, ensuring the highest level of unified program implementation possible.
o Regularly evaluate Teaching Artists and Site staff performance, including periodic written & oral reviews.
o Collaborate with Site Coordinator, GPA staff and El Sistema Colorado Executive Director to maintain excellent communication with parents/guardians and promote their engagement.
o Establish and support partnerships to promote ESC, student learning and development.
o Establish and track progress of annual workplan.
o Provide student progress reports each semester to parents and GPA teachers and leadership.
o Collaborate with El Sistema Colorado Executive Director, school staff and outside evaluators in program evaluation processes in areas of data generation, collection, documentation, and analysis.
o Participate in community and fundraising events, and public relations activities.
o Assist Executive Director in developing organizational goals and objectives consistent with the mission and vision of El Sistema Colorado.
o Implement El Sistema Colorado services, activities and operational policies in partnership with GPA to ensure all program objectives are met.
o Work with the El Sistema Colorado Executive Director and GPA school principal to develop and implement highly effective, measurable short-term and long-term program outcomes for El Sistema Colorado students.
o Assist Executive Director in establishing annual GPA budget.
o Execute a long-range growth plan with the Executive Director and school staff to strongly encourage participants’ deep engagement in El Sistema Colorado through high school graduation.
o Support Lead Teaching Artist team drawn from all El Sistema Colorado sites.
o Assist Executive Director in the development and implementation of El Sistema Colorado policies and procedures.
Four-year undergraduate degree or equivalent experience required; post-graduate degree or equivalent experience highly desirable. Bachelors or Masters Degree in Music Education preferred with emphasis in elementary music education.
• Demonstrated excellent musicianship and artistry as a teacher/performer.
• Strong commitment to El Sistema’s philosophy of social change through music and the mission of El Sistema Colorado.
• Strong knowledge of music pedagogy and curriculum; experience with Kodaly, Orff, Dalcroze or other music methodology of great value; certification preferred.
• Exceptional classroom management skills
• Experience leading ensembles
• Experience working with children from diverse ethnic and economic backgrounds; experience working in underserved communities.
• Experience developing and leading effective teaching teams.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
• Interest and ability to be a motivational mentor and role model for students, parents, and peers as an artist, teacher and citizen.
• Excellent organizational skills.
• Fluency in Spanish a plus.
