Young Musicians Shine in Red Rocks Debut

El Sistema Colorado Young Musicians Delight Crowd, Fellow Musicians During Red Rocks Debut

Students from Swansea Elementary, Garden Place Elementary and Bruce Randolph Middle School joined DeVotchKa and the Colorado Symphony last night. Music fans at Red Rocks who came for the lush orchestrations of DeVotchKa mixed with the rich symphonic sounds of the Colorado Symphony’s world-class musicians got an additional treat, when 40 young musicians from El Sistema Colorado took the stage.

Invited by DeVotchKa, longtime supporters of the El Sistema Colorado music program that boost educational and social outcomes for low-income students, the students (ages 6-13) joined DeVotchKa and the Symphony on the song “Firetrucks on the Boardwalk” and got to experience the thrill of performing at the world-famous venue for the first time.

“To be welcomed onstage by these phenomenal musicians and then experience the overwhelming support of the crowd was an amazing moment for our young students,” according to El Sistema Colorado Executive Director Jan Brennan. “These youngsters are learning that they are capable of more than they ever thought possible, and that inspires and sustains them in the many challenges they face.”

DeVotchKa drummer Shawn King said, “Everyone in the band had the luxury of formal instrument training which clearly shaped how we became a rock band. We’re seeing that go away in schools in just one generation ¬¬– a frustrating reality. When El Sistema Colorado approached me with the idea of collaborating, everyone in the band was instantly thrilled with the possibility.” Students shine in Red Rocks debut
