Our Newest Paper Violin Graduation!

Each fall, El Sistema Colorado looks forward to welcoming a new group of kindergartners into the Paper Violin Orchestra! Shortly after the start of the new school year, students and their families spent time constructing tiny violins made from cardboard, tape, paper, paint, and glue. Although these instruments will not make sound, students learn vital skills and knowledge through beginning on paper mache instruments.

By late fall, kindergartners will know about the parts of the instrument, how to hold it properly, how to move the bow, and proper instrument care, all while continuing to develop their singing and ear training. Upon mastering these skills on their paper violins, kindergartners will participate in a graduation ceremony, during which they will receive their very first real violin. A proud moment for students, staff, and families alike!

ESC Ambassadors at Adventure Film Festival

DSC01628

On Saturday, September 12th, the El Sistema Colorado Ambassadors, an ensemble composed of students and staff who represent ESC in performances throughout the community, were given an opportunity to perform at the Adventure Film Festival, an annual event held at the Boulder Theater. The film festival aims to bring audiences inspiring stories of life and adventure from around the world.

ESC Ambassadors provided an appropriately upbeat musical encore to Landfill Harmonic, a film which chronicles the success of the Recycled Orchestra of Cateura, a group of young musicians living near a landfill in Paraguay who play on instruments amazingly constructed from garbage. Landfill Harmonic underscores the transformative power of music which is seen and heard among the El Sistema community every day. Thank you, Adventure Film Festival, for allowing us to share our love of music with the community of Boulder!

You can be a Snack Superhero!

Playing music is great fun, but also hard work! We are seeking fuel for our young musicians in the form of daily snacks for our summer programs.

If you can provide 65-70 snacks (one for each student) one morning this summer (weekdays July 6-31), please contact Jamie at jwolf@elsistemacolorado.org.

Good student snacks include individually-packaged granola bars, nuts, popcorn, chips, crackers, fruit, or something homemade like cookies or cupcakes. Snacks can be delivered to Bryant-Webster (3635 Quivas Street in Denver) by 10:20am.

While you’re here delivering snacks, you’re welcome to watch and listen to our young orchestra rehearse and also meet our students!

If you would like to provide snacks for a day of camp between July 6 -31, please contact Jamie at jwolf@elsistemacolorado.org.

Thank you for your continued support!
